Remembering Opening Day
Snapshot for posterity, because big wheel keep on turnin' in the bigs:
One more Opening Day to go this week -- Minnesota at Toronto Tuesday night -- and then all those other home openers to follow next week. Nice to remember what it looked like here for a few days.
What have been your favorite Opening Day moments so far this week?

Um, anyone see Pujols go deep yesterday for the 2nd time? A monster no-doubter to the upper deck in left. A line drive, too. That's my favorite moment.

My favorite moment was the double Eric Byrnes hit in the 5th inning of D'Backs v. Rockies. The Rox centerfielder did a nice job of cutting off the ball before it went to the wall. It was a play that would have held a lot of hitters to a long single. But not Byrnesie. He charged out of the batter's box, and rounded first without hesitation; he was going for two all the way.
Knees high, on the balls of his feet, all out all the time, Eric Byrnes is a beautiful runner.

Mine probably would have been the Bagwell 2 minutes if I had been there or seen it live. I am going with Tom Glavine's first pitch. I watched the White Sox-Indians and withstood most of the rain, but there was something indescribable about being in the office on Monday and having a TV monitor on and suddenly that realization again: It's SO good to see games that matter again. Real stats. Real Ws. So for me it was just that first spine tingle that life started again.

Although Rolen's one and Pujols' two homers were spectacular, my favorite moment of the Cards' opening game actually came during the first at-bat of the game. David Eckstein's diving catch that sent him into the wall down the third base foul territory was demonstrated why I love him and the Cardinals so much. Talk about playing hard for the "whole season"...there no better place to start than the very beginning! (Of course the negative side of this moment was I was unable to breath for about 15 seconds thinking Eckstein may have hurt himself! As usual, though, he just got up and walked back to short.)

I don't need Christmas or Chanukah or my birthday or the official start of summer or New Year's. Just give me Opening Day.

Predictable maybe, but I'm going for Jonny Gomes' homer. It had been a long winter missing that swing!!

I have a new one: It's the guy who reached over the rail to snag a foul ball with his left hand WHILE HOLDING HIS SLEEPING BABY IN HIS RIGHT HAND.

That's even better than the guy who caught a foul ball while talking on a cell phone during one of the last exhibition games.

Watching that A-ROD grand slam in Oaktown and losing my voice cheering.
This will be hard to top for me.

It may be bad form to quote your own blog, but I posted "One of the nicest parts of the day came for me in about the 8th inning. Our seats were not on the end of a row, and my daughter will only sit between me and Mom. There were two ladies sitting on my left. One of them turned to me and asked “Is your name Daryl?” Unable to lie about it, I told them that it was. My initial thought was that I may have met them somewhere in the past and I just didn’t recognize them. Then one of them said “I read your Blog.” As Rachael Ray of the Food Network would say – “How cool is that?”

I HAVE BEEN A MET FAN SINCE 1962 AND I MUST SAY THIS YEAR I AM SO ANNOYED WITH THE ANNOUNCERS OF THE GAME. MY BEEF IS WITH KEITH HERNANDEZ, I THINK HE IS A TOOOOOOOOOO LATINO. I AM NOT A PERSON WHO CARES WHAT YOU ARE, BUT I THINK HIS VIEWS ARE STRICTLY FOR HIS CHOSEN PLAYERS AND NOT THE WHOLE TEAM. FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS HE DID NOTHING BUT BAD MOUTH THE METS. HE IS NOT BEING FAIR. I DON'T ENJOY HIS COMMENTS AND HOW HE THINKS HE KNOWS EVERYTHING. I THINK AS AN ANNOUNCER EVERYONE SHOULD BE AN ANNOUNCER LIKE MEL ALLEN NOT A NO IT ALL LIKE HERNANDEZ. SORRY KEITH I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO YOUR CRITICAL VIEWS TOO LONG. YOU'RE AN ANNOUNCER ? NOT A MANAGER. SO LONG METS I'M GOING TO THE PADRES WITH MIKE PIAZZA AND MIKE CAMMERON. YOU'VE PICKED ON PIAZZA TOO MUCH AND YOU COULDN'T MAKE A PIMPLE ON HIS BUTT.
SINCERELY,

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, Keith Hernandez is mean, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Just because you are an obvious rascist doesn't mean you have to poo poo other peoples ideas. Our country is in a sad state of disrepair when bigots like you are allowed to run around spewing their venom. Buenos Dias s**thead.
