Spheroid: Yankees Chick
Yankees Chick is one of many MLBlogs dedicated to the Bronx Bombers, and thanks to Beth for taking the time to send in her Nine Questions as today’s featured Spheroid:
Why did you sign up for an MLBlog?
I was doing a search for some Josh Beckett news (my dad is a Sox fan) and I came across Cyn’s Red Sox Chick in that search, and I thought it would be fun to vent and rant and talk about my favorite team with other people who have a passion for the sport as much as I do. It’s hard as a female to talk about baseball without people assuming you’re a fan girl or in it just because someone you know likes it and you have no interest in the sport yourself. Here, I’ve been able to talk to to a lot of other women who know the sport like the back of their hand and I’ve been able to learn a lot from them as well.
My favorite team is the New York Yankees. I grew up in Chicago, Ill., up in Cubs country, but my dad is a born-and-raised Red Sox fan from Boston. There wasn’t much NL talk in the house, it was mostly the AL — especially the AL East. Back in 1994, a friend of mine who was a diehard Yankee fan got tickets to a Yanks/White Sox game and I went with her and she started telling me about the team and how they’ve been doing and who plays what position . . . stuff like that. I started following the team with her, and I’ve been hooked on the boys ever since. A lot of people accused me of being a bandwagoner since the Yankees went on that great dynasty run in the ’90s, but once I point out that I started following them BEFORE they started winning, they usually shut up.
What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I like blogging because it gives me an avenue to express my likes/dislikes, opinions and any other kind of crazy nonsense that comes out of my head. I live in Georgia now, and meeting other Yankee fans is somewhat difficult, so blogging with other fans gives me an opportunity to talk to them about our team in a way that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
Favorite blog, including at least one MLBlog:
My favorite blog is actually not a sports-related blog at all. It’s Pink Is The New Blog and it’s really snarky and full of celebrity gossip, which is one of my guilty pleasures. I love reading it and getting a kick out of the stupid things celebrities do when they think we aren’t watching. Another blog I like is the New York Yankees blog, because it gives really in-depth summaries of games, and they have great in-game pictures and polls. The MLBlog that I like the most is probably Mile High Yankees. Some others that I read often are Red Sox Chick (it’s good to get it from the other side too), Baseball & The Boogie Down Bronx and the MLB Trivia Blog.
Your most memorable Major League moments:
One that stands out is Aaron Boone’s home run in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. My roommate and I were staying up all night to watch the game and we were a bundle of nerves because the game had gone back and forth and back and forth and we didn’t know how many extra innings it was going to take for a winner to be decided. She had just got up to put a pizza in the oven when Boone smacked Wake’s knuckler into the upper-deck in left field. We were jumping up and down and screaming so loud we woke up our entire dorm floor! Another one was the entire 2001 World Series, especially Games 3-4-5. I really thought there was some magic going on or something because it seemed like nothing was going to stop the Yankees from winning. Just watching each of those games get more and more suspenseful and knowing that somehow, some way they would win made me feel good. That was a pretty low time in my life and having my favorite team put a smile on my face when I didn’t think I could smile made it seem like the weight of the world was off my shoulders.
What would you be doing if you weren’t blogging?
Probably catching up on some much-needed sleep, finally finishing The Andromeda Strain, and hanging out with my sister.
Last item you bought at the MLB.com Shop:
Who is your favorite MLB player?
This one is tough because I have several scattered over different teams. My two favorite Yankees are Alex Rodriguez and Mike Mussina. I followed both of them before they were on the Yankees and was beyond overjoyed when they signed here — especially Alex . . . I did NOT want him in Boston. Other players that I like are Beckett, Barry Zito, Rich Harden and Nomar Garciaparra.
Being around friends and family, watching a good Yankee game and eating all the chili cheese fries you can stomach. Oh yeah, throw in a large, super-jumbo sized Diet Coke with that.
